Pre Workout Nutrition

I was wondering about pre-workout nutrition. I used to eat meals a few hours before working out but with waking up so early to get to class it's been hard. Is pre-nutrition really important?

The quick answer- no (read more here.) Basically, eat whatever meal or snack adheres to your other fitness protocols (are you eating paleo?) and allows you to workout comfortably/optimally. Some very well respected trainers even tout the benefits of working out fasted.  I'm transitioning into a morning exerciser right now, I swallow a couple hard boiled eggs right before working out and it seems to be treating me fine.  Post workout nutrition is much more important for recovery and strength building, read more about that here.

What's a good protein kind of thing I can mix with milk to have for breakfast/ before Crossfit. I don't want to eat until after but would like to have a liquid something beforehand. I drank muscle milk in college but I obviously was running a lot more than I am now. Thank you.

I got some advice from Coach Brian on this one, and mixed in some of my own thoughts: For protein shakes pre-workout, Coach Brian suggests Optimum Nutrition & Dymatize. Both are fairly pure, are low in sugar and reasonably priced. To get really particular (you don't have to take this step,) have a caesein shake pre-, and whey shake post-workout.

You may also try consuming BCAA (branch chained amino acides, the building blocks of protein) before and during a workout for fasted training. This is what I do. The brand I take is called Cellucor.

Now, if you're looking to eat something just to settle your stomach, you'll probably want real food. An easy protein is a hard boiled egg. Or a small "normal" snack for you that will keep you comfortable.
